The pickpocketing trainer is a man who can be found in the Thieves' guild. You can pickpocket him for training. When you pickpocket him you will get blue hankies (worth one hanky point each) and Thieving experience (which changes according to a player's Thieving level). Whenever you fail to pickpocket the trainer or a volunteer, you will be stunned and damaged for 1 life point, and a remark such as "Spotted you!" or "No, no, not like that."

Note: Hankies are not items that go in your inventory, they are just mentioned in the chat log. For example, in the southern (more challenging) pickable chests: "There is a single red handkerchief inside."

Experience and training

Thieving volunteers are arguably the fastest thieving experience, even surpassing pyramid plunder at 91. This method does however require very rapid, accurate mouse movements to yield a high xp/hour rate. If done correctly, this can yield upwards to 95k thieving xp/hour. Experience is gained at level +5 rate per pickpocket

Wearing Gloves of silence will dramatically decrease your chance at failing, and from level 95 thieving onwards, a player will have a 100% success rate when pickpocketing these volunteers if wearing Gloves of silence and Ardougne cloak 3 or higher.

Trivia

  • It is thought that standing behind the trainer will increase the chances of pickpocketing him successfully, thus enabling a player to make multiple pickpockets in a row, and therefore making obtaining hanky points much less time consuming. However, this has been confirmed to be false.
  • The text when attempting to pickpocket him is "You attempt to pick the man's pocket.". However, when attempting to pickpocket the nearby Pickpocketing volunteers, the text is "You attempt to pick the volunteer's pocket.".
