Leet (or 1337speak) is a combinations of numbers, letters and symbols to form a word. For example, saying "leet" in leet form is 1337 (13375p3@|<). Some people use leet for fun or to bypass the chat filter. Some use 1337 to confuse other players. Some RuneScape players are bothered by leet speak and find it difficult to read. Others prefer correct English, not made-up "languages".

Example 1:

Player One: 0h mY g05h t3h g0d5w0rd Is l1k3 50 1337! (Oh my gosh the godsword is like so leet [elite]!) Player Two: Y4 R3@11Y!11!!!eleven!1! (Yeah, really!)

Example 2:

Player One: 1337 1$ 7/-/3 PWN@93! (Leet is the pwnage[ownage]!) Player Two: Erm...

Example 3:

Player One: Phr33 $700f p10x? (Free stuff please?) Player two: z0mg d0n'7 b3g n00b. (Oh my gosh, don't beg noob.)

A variety of combinations of symbols and numbers may be used to represent each letter. The characters used to represent a letter may resemble either the uppercase or lowercase letter, and are generally understood to mean the most appropriate case. Although there is no "official" list of leet characters, here are some of the most commonly understood:

0 can be used for O or o 1 can be used for I, L or T 2 can be used for Z or R 6 can be used for B or G £ can be used for E or L 7 can be used for T, L or Y $ can be used for S Please note this table is to be used as a guide and not a full translation tool. Leet is ever changing and not all replacements will, or can, be included.

Trivia

• When you first login, for a split second when your screen loads, your total level is shown to be 1337, otherwise know as Leet or Elite. However, the levels add up to 2437.
