It is obtained as a unique drop from [[ice strykewyrm]]s, which require 93 [[Slayer]] to kill. The golden parts of the staff can be recoloured by [[Xuan]] for a price of 2,000 Loyalty Points.

The staff of light features a number of properties that are very useful to mages:
* It boosts [[Magic damage]] by 15%, (shared only with the [[Armadyl battlestaff]] and [[dominion staff]]), the second largest boost in the game after the [[chaotic staff]]'s 20% boost. (outside of Daemonheim, whereas inside Daemonheim the [[Empowered catalytic staff]] is 20%, and the [[doomcore staff]] (25%), and [[celestial catalytic staff]] (30%) which are all greater damage wise.)
* When a combat spell is cast with the staff, there is a 1/8 (12.5%) chance that the staff will negate the rune cost for that spell. This chance increases to 20% when wearing [[combat robes]], and 50% when wearing [[battle robes]].
* The staff of light can be used instead of a [[slayer staff]] to cast [[Magic Dart]].
* It has the fifth highest Magic accuracy bonus among staves at +17, behind [[Zuriel's staff]] and [[Chaotic staff]] (+18) and the [[master wand]] and [[polypore staff]] (+20).
* The staff has a [[special attack]], called ''Power of Light'', that envelopes the user in a shield of light which will reduce all melee damage by 50% for one minute. This special also stacks with the Protect/Deflect Melee prayers. (But '''note''' [[Verac the Defiled]] has a chance to hit full damage through the special, this only happens when his set effect is activated.) The special attack uses 100% of the bar, and the effect will run out if the staff of light is unequipped before the minute is up.

The staff of light is also notable for its offensive melee stats, which are unusually high for a Magic weapon. Its stats are comparable to the [[dragon longsword]], the Longsword has 3+ better stab bonuses, but the staff has +1 better slash and strength bonus in addition to the magic damage boost and accuracy. It is the fourth [[Equipment_bonuses#Other_bonuses|strongest in strength bonus]] one-handed non-degrading weapon in the game (behind the [[abyssal whip]], the [[Abyssal vine whip]] and [[dragon battleaxe]]), and third most [[slash]]-accurate (behind [[Abyssal vine whip]], [[Abyssal Whip]], tying with [[Korasi's sword]] and [[Dragon battleaxe]]) one-handed non-degrading weapon in the game.

==Change colour==
In addition, it is now also possible to have your Staff of Light in a different colour, by spending 2,000 [[Loyalty Programme Shop|Loyalty points]], as of [[21 September]] [[2011]]. The parts that are recoloured are the gold areas of the Staff. Available colours for the Staff of light are green, baby blue, light red and a brighter yellow. According to Mod Rathe, the light yellow will be changed to be an inverted version of the original, where the blade and the middle part of the handle will be gold, while the two other parts of the handle will become silver.
