A Ring of recoil is made by enchanting a sapphire ring with Enchant Level 1 Jewellery. 10% of the damage dealt in an attack to a player wearing a Ring of recoil is dealt back to the attacker, whether a monster or another player. The damage is always rounded up to the nearest 10, so an attack for 101 life points (10% being 10.1) results in a "recoil" of 10.

The ring shatters after recoiling 400 life points. Due to its cost and limited lifespan, this item is not useful in many combat situations. However, many low-level players find the ring useful, as its lifespan is greatly increased against weaker opponents.

It currently costs coins for every 100 damage recoiled with rings of recoil.

It appears that when under attack from multiple opponents in a Multicombat area, the recoil damage is dealt on a random monster rather than the one that landed the blow, sometimes even deflecting multiple hits on a single target at the same time.

It is advised, when possible, to use Ring of Recoil against powerful quest bosses.

Contrary to popular belief, the ring does stack with Vengeance. No experience is awarded for recoil hits.

The method that the game uses to determine when a Ring of Recoil crumbles is: the Ring of Recoil being worn crumbles after 400 life points have been recoiled by the player with any Ring of Recoil. Right-click "Check" on a worn ring to see how much damage could still be recoiled. In other words, the game remembers how many "recoils" have been used by the player on any Ring of Recoil and crumbles the worn ring after 400 life points have been recoiled. Two points:
* This prevents people from scamming others by selling Rings of Recoil which would otherwise only have a few life points left and also prevents the need for classifying 40 different Rings of Recoil (i.e. Ring of Recoil (280), Ring of Recoil (130), etc.)
* Dropping a Ring of Recoil does not "reset" the next ring to 400, as the data for the life points is associated with the character, not the item.
Immune creatures
Some monsters are not affected by Rings of recoil. Note that, contrary to popular belief, the ring does work against the Barrows brothers.

A ring of recoil is known not to work against these creatures:

* Aviansie
* Bork
* Metal Dragons
* Skeletal Wyverns
* Vyrewatch
* Wild jade vine
* Sunfreet

The ring of recoil also does not work against the following quest characters:

* Count Draynor in Vampyre Slayer
* King Roald (monster) in What Lies Below
* The Dagannoth Mother found in Blood Runs Deep
* Nomad in the grandmaster quest Nomad's Requiem
* One of the TzHaar-Xil (Hardened) in The Elder Kiln

If an opponent runs out of life points, but inflicts damage just before it dies, a message will appear stating that: "You are unable to reflect damage back to this creature."

Trivia
* Before the Constitution update of 3 March 2010, the one notable use of the Ring of recoil was to defeat Koschei the Deathless in his fourth form. Since he always dealt 1 point of damage every hit, the recoil was also 1 point every hit. After the multiplication of all life points and damage by a factor of 10 in the update, the ring is no longer as useful on him, but still quite effective.
*The TzHaar monster Tz-Kek, from the Fight Caves minigame, has a Ring of Recoil effect when attacked with melee, due to the high surface temperature of its skin.
*At one point, there was a glitch where if two players were fighting and they both had a ring of recoil on, they would be hit many times, because the ring counters damage, and when it would counter the other players ring would counter, and the rings would continue to counter back non-stop until one of the rings shattered. This has been fixed, though players still report it to happen in certain locations, such as the Fight Pits and Clan Wars.
*Lexicus Runewright, the dungeoneering boss, reflects 1/3 melee damage.
*There is currently a glitch that causes deflection damage dealt by rings of recoil shows as "typeless" hitsplats when Player killing.
