The '''Penance master trident''' is a [[staff]] from [[Barbarian Assault]]. It is a members only item. It requires 70 Magic and Attack to wield and is 2-handed. This weapon is an upgraded version of the regular [[Penance trident]]. The Penance trident can be bought with 390 Barbarian Assault reward points in every role. If the player has 70 Attack, they can upgrade their trident for free into a master trident, which has better attack stats than the normal trident.

When wielded, it will attempt to 'save' runes used in any spell. This is how it does so:

*The trident finds out how many different rune types you are using for your spell.
*For each rune type the trident makes a 1 in 60 roll.
*If successful it will save all runes of that type.

So for example, the spell [[Earth blast]] requires 1 death rune, 3 air runes and 4 earth runes; there is a 1 in 60 chance that once cast, your penance trident will save either 1 death rune, 3 air runes or 4 earth runes. The Penance trident cannot save only ''some'' of the runes of any rune type, it will either save '''none''' or '''all''' of any rune type.

Note: the master trident has the same special rune saving ability as a normal penance trident.

==Special attack==
The master penance trident, and the penance trident, have a special attack called ''Reap'', which gives a chance of instantly killing an enemy with a combat level less than 50 (not including players, bosses, summoning familiars, or creatures that must be killed in a specific way). In PvP, 'Reap' has the same chance of removing a third of the opponent's current lifepoints. The Reap special attack consumes 50% special attack energy.

The special attack cannot be attempted on NPCs above level 50. The chat box says "The Penance Trident only works on foes with a Combat Level less than 50." and no special attack energy is drained.

Note: The master penance trident has the same special attack as a normal penance trident.

==Trivia==
* Despite being a trident, the master penance trident is considered a staff.
* Even though this weapon's magic bonus exceeds that of the [[Ancient staff]] by 2, many people prefer to use the Ancient staff because of the 10% bonus damage, its relative ease to acquire, and the ability to equip an item in the shield slot.
* The max recorded hit with the trident is 1050. This is possible by using the special attack on a [[Wall beast]] while it is at full health.
* A trident is the weapon/symbol of the Greek/Roman mythological god Poseidon/Neptune.
* If the special attack 'Reap' successfully hits one of the humans in Canifis (level 24) it will not kill the NPC as it will transform into a werewolf before the damage can take effect, but once it has transformed into a werewolf (level 88) the NPC will be hit 600 life points (the human form's LP level), hence not completely killing it. This may be a glitch.
* The instant kill ability of the special attack does not work on players, as this would greatly unbalance certain aspects of PvP combat.
* The popularity of this weapon has dropped since the release of the [[staff of light]].
* In the Dummies room in the Warrior's Guild in Burthorpe, this item is useful because it has a stab, slash, and crush, which use the Accurate, Aggressive, and Defensive styles respectively. This means with this single weapon, you can correctly hit all but the Controlled type of dummy.
