An '''Onion''' is a [[food]] [[Items|item]] that heals 10 [[Constitution|Life Points]] when consumed raw. When a player eats an onion, the message "It's always sad to see a grown man/woman cry" appears in the player's chat box.

An onion looks like [[garlic]] with a different colour, and its main uses are in [[Farming]] and [[Cooking]]. Players can also take two onions and five [[coins]] to [[Aggie]] in [[Draynor Village]] to make [[yellow dye]]. As she does this, you can see something of a giant magical onion above her cauldron, that will turn into a bottle of yellow dye - you will have to look closely to see this.

==Obtaining onions==

Onions [[spawn]] in the back yard of [[Fred the Farmer]]'s farmhouse west of the sheep pen in [[Lumbridge]], and in the field north of [[Rimmington]]. After the Draynor graphical update, they are now available just south of the Draynor bank. Players only need to pull them out of the ground.

Players can also buy onions on the [[Grand Exchange]] or by trading directly with other players.
Members can buy onions from [[Hudo]] in the [[Tree Gnome Stronghold]], or from [[Osvald]] in the [[Miscellanian Food Shop]] of [[Miscellania and Etceteria Dungeon]].

After completing the [[Fremennik Trials]] quest, members can buy onions from the [[greengrocer]]s on Miscellania and Etceteria. Alternatively, they can just steal them from the [[vegetable stall]]s there if they have at least level 2 [[Thieving]].

Members can grow their own onions using the [[Farming]] skill (see below).

Members can gain onions for free from a [[teak larder]] in the [[kitchen]] of their [[player-owned house]], though they will need level 43 [[Construction]] to build it.

Members can also purchase onions at the [[Farming shop]]s after another player has sold there, but this is rare since those shops cycle their player stocks rather quickly. Note that since the Grand Exchange update, the [[Farming shop]]s sell onions at GE prices (when they have onions) but will pay players only a starting payment of 8 coins for an onion, assuming the store has no onions in inventory - the payment per onion goes down gradually as the inventory increases.

Members can also find onions in the patch east of the southern entrance of [[Rellekka]].

==Farming==
[[Pay-to-play|Members]] can grow onions at level 5 [[Farming]] to gain 9.5 [[experience]] points for planting them and 10.5 experience points for harvesting them. They need to plant 3 [[onion seed]]s in an allotment patch, and take approximately 40 minutes to grow.

Gardeners will look after the onion plants for a payment of 1 [[sack]] filled with 10 [[potato]]es. Growing [[marigold]]s in the adjacent flower patch helps to protect the onion plants from disease.

Members can store up to 10 onions in a sack. They can then use the sack of onions to pay a gardener to watch over growing [[cabbage]]s or [[asgarnian hops]].

Alternatively, members can use onions in a [[Compost Bin]] to make [[compost]].

==Cooking==
Although players can eat onions by themselves, their main use is as an ingredient in [[Cooking]]. They are used in making [[ugthanki kebab]]s, [[garden pie]]s, and [[mushroom and onion potato]]es (as well as [[fried onions]] and [[mushroom and onion]], used in making the topping).

They are also used in [[gnome cooking]] to make [[vegetable batta]]s, [[worm hole]]s, and [[vegetable ball]]s.
