It is the weaker version of a [[Mystic mud staff]]. It requires 30 [[Attack]] and [[Magic]] to wield and provides an unlimited amount of [[Water rune|water]] and [[earth rune]]s, both of which are used in [[Spells#Curses|curse spells]]. Earth and water runes are also used together in the [[Enchant Level 5 Jewellery]] spell, [[Bones to Bananas]]/[[Bones to Peaches|Peaches]] Spell, and the [[String Jewellery]] Lunar Spell. A mud battlestaff can be upgraded to a [[mystic mud staff]] by [[Thormac]] for 40,000 coins after completing the [[Scorpion Catcher]] quest, or for 27,000 coins while wearing a [[Seers' headband 3]]. Mud battlestaves are dropped exclusively by [[Dagannoth Prime]]. The mud battlestaff has a noticeably different appearance compared to the other battlestaves, as well as not having an orb on top of the staff. This is the second released hybrid elemental staff, released before the [[Steam battlestaff]] and after the [[Lava battlestaff]]. Visually, the mud battlestaff is identical to the [[mystic mud staff]].

Since the release of [[Dungeoneering]], the [[Tome of frost]] provides a cheaper alternative than a mud battlestaff and can be used in conjunction with other staves to provide a different combination of runes. Although, they require at least 48 dungeoneering, 43,000 tokens, and it takes up two hand slots instead of one.
