As Karil uses Ranged, his armour gives a high Magic defence bonus, making it popular for fighting enemies with powerful Magic attacks, such as the [[Corporeal Beast]]. The crossbow, unlike many other crossbows, is two handed and requires a special type of ammunition called [[Bolt rack]]s. Bolt racks can be obtained by opening chests in the Barrows activity, buying from [[Ak-Haranu]] on the [[Port Phasmatys]] docks for 420 coins each, trading with another player, or purchasing through the [[Grand Exchange]]. Karil's can be used in pvp to stop players from escaping via agility shortcuts.

The set effect is used occasionally by players as a means of shutting down macroers at the [[wildy agility|Wilderness Agility course]], as the bots will continuously eat - allowing their agility to be drained effectively. This is often done in large groups, following the mass reporting of said bots.

The set effect of Karil's set is a source of criticism, as it is seen as not very useful, especially as it has no effect on [[NPC]]s. This has been a long-going issue for [[Karil the Tainted|Karil]]'s as well as [[Torag the Corrupted|Torag]]'s set owners wanting a better set effect compared to the other brothers. In addition, when combined with a [[blessed dragonhide coif]], [[black dragonhide armour]] gives better melee defensive bonuses than Karil's set (though Karil's set has better stats in Magic, Ranged and Summoning defence), is much cheaper, and does not degrade. Also Karil's crossbow is less accurate than a [[rune crossbow]], and the ammunition is weaker than [[steel bolts]]. The release of [[Royal D'hide]] gives another alternative to Karils with significantly higher melee stats while having similar magic defense.
