New page

beta
Hitsplat is a term used to refer to the damage icon appearing above a player, an NPC, or a monster, while in combat. A hitsplat usually results in the reduction of life points. A splat of disease doesn't result in a loss of life points but a loss of skill points. All hitsplats have a number in the centre, which determines the number of life points or levels in a skill that you have either lost or gained. Depending on how large the number is, the width of a splat is variable. However, before the update there were only two versions of each splat, one for numbers three digits or higher, and one for smaller hits. Most hits use the Arial font, while a player's maxed hit uses a special font to put emphasis on it.

Types of hitsplat
The colour of the hitsplat usually gives an indication of the type of damage and the number inside the amount of damage dealt. Hitsplat depicts the magnitude affection of an attack, effect, however a block or miss will always induce a 0, but the randomization result is never shown. Please note that with exception of healing from the Poison Purge auras, the magenta splats do not happen outside dungeoneering floors, and using anything to heal outside currently does not yield any hitsplats. Whenever a heavy damage was dealt before the hitsplats were updated, the same splat background was used, and it was possible for the number to overlap the splat's edge.
Regular damage from Melee, Magic, Ranged, Agility obstacles, Thieving traps, etc. The hitsplat will show you what you were damaged with (Melee, Magic, Ranged, etc) with a little icon next to the hitsplat. The lighter red splat shows a hit that you have inflicted or received, and a golden splat is rendered by your max hit.

Lighter, almost colorless, splats appear when someone takes damage not dealt or received by you, allowing you to easily distinguish damage in mulitplayer situations.
Damage Soaked: if any armour's damage absorption stat protected you from damage, there will be two splats next to each other - one with the damage and an icon for its combat type, and another with the absorbed damage and a shield icon. Damage absorbed by other players has a darker splat.

Damage to Bulwark beast's armour using a Pickaxe is also indicated with this splat, as well as reducing the Fairy Godfather's shields during the Battle at Orks Rift. |Protect from Ranged or Deflect Ranged can protect you from some or all of this type of damage. In addition, melee armour usually has high bonuses against ranged, as well as the possible ability to Absorb Ranged.
|Damage which was absorbed by any piece of equipment which has an absorption stat. Note that this is next to a blue splat, unlike the other icons.
|Damage absorption only occurs when you wear amour providing an absorption bonus in a combat style and are hit for over 200 in that style.
|Dragon Breath
|Damage caused by Dragonfire.
|An Anti-dragon shield or Dragonfire shield can absorb a substantial amount of dragonfire damage. Antifire and Super antifire potions can also improve your resistance to dragonfire. Protect/Deflect Magic can also reduce the damage taken slightly, but it does not stack with other protection methods and may be too insignificant on its own. Void Knight equipment can also slightly protect you in a similar fashion.
|Desert Heat
|Desert heat is a damaging effect which only occurs in the larger parts of the Kharidian Desert. It occurs because the player is dehydrating from the hot, arid climate.
|Waterskins, and Enchanted water tiara, or Choc-ice can keep a player hydrated, meaning no damage will be taken. Desert clothing can reduce the frequency of damage taken or the frequency of needing to drink.
There are lots of other hitsplats like failing during a puzzle/challenge in Dungeoneering, which use the same image as dragon breath and desert heat.
Trivia
*New hitsplats were introduced in Damage Control and announced in the December 2010 Behind the Scenes article. They were released on 14 December 2010. They were also seen in the RuneScape Developer Blog: Void Knights Series vlog previously.
*The font used in the golden "maxed" hitsplat is the same that is used in the "You are here" and "Your marker" signs on the world map. Previously, the font was used in almost all of the login interface, but after the lobby update it was practically gone, seen only on the map and some obscure interfaces, so this update can be seen as marking the return of that font.
*When another player hits a golden coloured hit while using melee, the right side of the bar is cut off and there is another left end on the right side.
*All new hitsplats are built out of small, 4-pixel wide fragments. This leads some, such as absorption to have an odd "pattern" in their backgrounds.
*Some times it is possible for a zero hitsplat to appear instead of a miss hitsplat. This is due to the hit is dealt after the target is dead.
*Before a hidden update on 21 September 2011, the golden max hitsplat didn't take into account the effects of certain equipment such as a slayer helm or salve amulet. As such, while using these items on the appropriate monsters, players would often produce golden hitsplats by hitting above what would otherwise be their maximum.
*It's still possible for hitsplats to overlap especially at crowded areas.
