Players would take items to one of the appropriate certers and exchange them for certificates containing five of the item. They could then be traded to other players or un-certed by using them again on the certer. This was a tedious process when large quantities were involved as players could only create six certificates per inventory.<br />

Certificates were abandoned in the transition to [[RuneScape 2]], replaced by [[note|bank notes]] that were easier to create and could handle more than five items. Existing certificates were replaced with notes.<br />
