The '''Broken pickaxe''' used to be what remained of a [[pickaxe]] after a player attempted to extract ore from a [[exploding rock|smoking rock]] and the rock exploded. If damaged, players could take it to [[Nurmof]] in the Dwarven mines or [[Bob (smith)|Bob]] in Lumbridge to get it repaired. The previously mentioned NPCs would repair broken pickaxes for free or a fee depending on the pickaxe type.<br />

Players could also bank them for later repairs or sell them as well. *On [[25 February]] [[2009]] all broken pickaxes were changed back to regular pickaxes. Jagex did this in order to keep a broken pickaxe from becoming a discontinued item like the [[Disk of returning]], [[Partyhat]], or any of the other rare items in the game.<br />
*A broken [[adamant pickaxe]] used to exist behind the temple wall on [[Ape Atoll]], it could not be reached (like the [[Monkey skull]]) and was named "Broken pickaxe." (Including the period) after the [[25 February]] updates. Its examine was "Useless." It has since been replaced by a normal [[bronze pickaxe]].<br />
