The Broken hatchet was the result of attempting to cut an Ent. The same name was given to all 8 axes if it is broken; only the image and examine text were different. If the axe was wielded whilst it was broken, it would stay equipped until it is unequipped. It could not be re-equipped until it had been repaired in Lumbridge at Bob's Brilliant Axes shop for some coins. Players also could not cut trees with a broken axe; they must have had another axe to cut a tree.

The broken axe was removed with the removing of the Ent random event. This is now a discontinued item, and all in existence have since been automatically repaired into their normal state.

All kinds of axes could be broken, from bronze to dragon. The price of repairing an axe was higher the better the metal.

Trivia
*A broken axe had a different attack style than a normal axe. Its style resembled that of a war hammer and other blunt-force type weapons, the sound it made while using it in combat also differed from regular axes.
*On 25 February 2009 all broken axes (along with broken pickaxes) were changed back to regular axes.
