An Anvil is used to smith items through the Smithing skill. An anvil can be used to smith items by using a bar on an anvil while the player has a hammer in their inventory or toolbelt, and then a selection screen will come up. After 4 October 2011 update, it is possible to use anvils by left-clicking on them once. Right-clicking now also reveals a 'smith' option.

There are several anvils located around the RuneScape world which are identified with an anvil icon on the world map and minimap.

The most convenient anvil may be that in Varrock, since it is directly opposite a bank/Grand Exchange. On 24 June 2010, Lumbridge got an anvil right next to the smithing furnace, arguably making it the most convenient anvil in the game, certainly for those who don't want to bank then travel to Varrock just to smith. There is also a box of hammers nearby, allowing players to completely fill their inventory with ore to smelt. It is advised to use the Culinaromancer's Chest if possible, and the bank on top of Lumbridge Castle if not).

There is no competition for anvils (since multiple players can use an anvil concurrently), but around a busy one, players may have to right-click and select, or they will often end up trying to use the metal bar on somebody standing by it.

There are several unusual anvils in Runescape. Included among these are the experimental anvil that players use in The Tourist Trap to help make a prototype dart, the tempered anvil in Kethsi, which is used to smith Bane projectiles after the Ritual of the Mahjarrat quest, and the Barbarian Anvil in Otto's Grotto, used to smith spears and hastae.
| style="vertical-align: top;"|Right next to the main smithing furnace in Lumbridge.
|-
|Varrock west
|Three anvils, closest to the western Varrock bank/Grand Exchange; low-level players can buy smithed items from higher level smiths.
|-
|Varrock centre
|Two anvils in Horvik's shop.
|-
|Varrock east
|Two anvils just south of the bank on the east side. Used in the Hard difficulty Varrock Tasks to make a Adamant helm.
|-
|Doric's workshop
|Next to the furnace, which can only be used if players have completed What's Mine is Yours (having completed Doric's Quest before the update also works). There are also five more anvils in the cavern below the workshop.
|-
|Dwarven Mine
|Two anvils that may be helpful if players are Superheat Item smelters, or by entering the South entrance from Falador, and the furnace there.
|-
|Thurgo's Peninsula
|South of Port Sarim, though there is little reason to smith here. The nearest bank is in Falador, and the nearest general store that sells hammers is in Rimmington. But can be used by low level miners who have not completed What's Mine is Yours as is closest to Falador except for Doric's hut.
|-
|Draynor Village
|In the sewer dungeon, where zombies and skeletons lurk. This is used in the Lumbridge/Draynor Tasks. Beware, however, that the monsters here may be aggressive to low level players.
|-
|Wilderness
|In the Western Ruins, at level 23 wilderness. May be useful to smith bars made at Eastern Ruins furnace and make room for some more ores from the Hobgoblin mine.
|-
|Daemonheim
|Closest to a furnace but only available while Dungeoneering.
|Gunnarsgrunn
|In the south-west most house. This is rarely used for smithing as the Varrock west anvil is much closer to the bank. However, it should also be noted that this is a Barbarian anvil, which means it can be used to smith Hastae and Spears only.
|-
|Keldagrim
|There are five anvils in Keldagrim. One can be found southwest of the city's bank, in Saro's Quality Armour Shop. This anvil's close proximity to the bank makes it fairly effective. A second anvil can be found in Wemund's Wrench Warehouse in Keldagrim Palace, though it is somewhat far from a bank and the nearby furnace in Vigr's Warhammers is unusable. Three additional anvils can be found in the Blast Furnace factory, though they require 60 smithing to use.
|West of bank.
|West of the Mage Arena.
|Nardah
|In the platelegs shop.
|-
|Port Khazard
|Just west of the Trawler activity.
|-
|Jatizso
|North of the platebody shop. Requires The Fremennik Trials.
|-
|Miscellania
|Next to the coal mine.
|-
|Karamja
|North of Tai Bwo Wannai.
|-
|Burthorpe
|In the north-east corner.
|-
|Rellekka
|In the area with mithril dragons. Can only be used to make dragon platebodies.
|Dorgesh-Kaan
|The city's unique three-headed golden anvil be can be found in Bartak's home in the southern part of the city. It functions as a standard anvil, and is different in appearance only. A furnace can be found in the same building; however, it can be used only for crafting glass and jewellery, and the nearest bank is somewhat far away, near the northern end of Dorgesh-Kaan.
Trivia
*If you try to use the "Smith" option without a hammer, an in-game message says; "You won't be able to make anything but a sore hand without a hammer." Interestingly, the Iron-fist smithing animation, purchased from Solomon's general store, does allow the player to seem to smith quite literally with their bare hands, although in truth the hammer is still necessary.
