To wield Ahrim's staff, the player must have 70 [[Attack]] and 70 [[Magic]]. It is one of only three staves that is two-handed, the other two being [[Toktz-mej-tal]] and the [[Penance trident]]. Many players do not use this staff along with the set; the reasons are that its two-handed and degrades over time of combat.

Being part of Ahrim's barrows set, if Ahrim's staff is wielded along with all of the other pieces of equipment in Ahrim's barrows set the player receives a special effect: successful [[Magic]] attacks have a 20% chance of lowering the opponent's [[Strength]] by five levels. This weapon is typically not used with the full set. On 2 September 2009, all spells can now be autocast without a staff. Ahrim's staff now gives a 10% [[magic damage]] bonus.

Because this item is comparable in price, magic attack, magic defence, and magic damage bonus to the [[Ancient staff]], it may be more cost-effective to use the ancient staff once [[Desert Treasure]] has been completed due to it being one-handed and non-degradable, and not requiring 70 [[Attack]].
