Notable features Trades materials in the Trade Octagon
[view][talk]

Traders are dwarves that live in Keldagrim, the capital of the Dwarven Realm. They work in the Trade Octagon, a large area in the city's massive palace.

The eight ruling companies of Keldagrim, the Consortium, are in constant need of labour, ore, and mining rights. Although some transactions are done formally behind desks by the companies' directors and secretaries, the large amount of trading performed often requires less formal methods. To accomplish this, the Consortium has hired traders to perform trades in the Trade Octagon.

Two traders for each company stand on each side of the Octagon, found in the centre of the city. Here they shout out their offers and look for potential deals. To help oversee this, the Trade Referee stands in the centre of the Octagon and ensures that the octagon runs as smoothly as possible.

Traders do not currently have roles in any quests, and cannot be talked to, but at level 90 Thieving, players may pickpocket them. Initially, an activity was planned for the Octagon, but as confirmed by a Jagex Moderator, this scheme has now been abandoned, replaced instead with the thieving element.

Thieving

File:90 Thieving.png
Players may steal from Traders at level 90 Thieving.

As of 9 September 2009, players can pickpocket the traders. This requires a Thieving level of 90 and players will be rewarded 556.5 experience if they are successful. The odds of success when pickpocketing traders seem to be better than elves and heroes. If a player fails to pickpocket a dwarf trader, they will be stunned for a few seconds and dealt 10 damage.

If a player fails to pickpocket the traders, they may be attacked by a level 86 Trade floor guard wandering nearby. Because the player will be stunned, the guard will be able to hit 2-3 times before they can respond, and can hit up to 160. A method to escape the attention of these would be to go up or down one of the nearby staircases. Guards can be trapped in the offices of some companies.

Players may also talk to their respective mining company and ask about the guards attacking them. The director of your company will ask you to deliver 2-4 bars of a random type of metal up to mithril within 14–18 minutes in return for bribing the trade floor guards. Your respective mining company is the one you picked to help during The Giant Dwarf Quest. It is recommended that players carry four bars of two different types of metal in order to increase their chances of being able to fulfill the request. If the director requests a type of bars which a player does not have, the player should not accept the task, and should simply talk to the director again until a better task is given. On completion of the task given, the guards will be bribed to ignore the player for 10 minutes. If the player steals from their respective company the guards will stop ignoring them. Warnings will be given 1 minute before the bribe runs out and when it does run out.

The player could alternatively trap the guards behind the cubicles in order to freely steal from the traders, but the guard may respawn if this happens and is not recommended.

Pickpocketing traders can yield both very high experience rates and a sizable profit. An Ardougne cloak 3 will significantly improve a player's success rate when pickpocketing the traders, as well as gloves of silence. Using these two items, players should be able to gain over 30,000 experience within one ten-minute bribe period. Accounting for banking and time in between bribes, this should allow for 150,000 experience per hour or more - slightly less than Pyramid Plunder with significantly better profits due to the ability to steal runite ore, Rune bars, and level 3 clue scrolls. The experience rates at levels closer to 99 may range up to 40k thieving experience within one ten-minute bribe, having potential of gaining over 200,000 experience points per hour and 300,000 coins per hour. A test over 5 bribe periods over 56 minutes total yielded 182,532 experience and 84,000 gp worth of loot (not including value of clue scroll) in that period for a thieving level of 94.

Recommended Equipment

It is recommended that players who plan on pickpocketing traders bring a number of items to maximise their experience and profit rate.

  • The Ardougne cloak 3 provides increased chances of success when pickpocketing throughout RuneScape.
  • Bandit's brew, Sq'irk juice, or the Thieving skillcape can also help your overall Thieving level and probability of pickpocketing. Alternatives include Magpie or Abyssal Lurker familiars and their scrolls, boosting Thieving by 2 and 4 respectively. Boosting your Thieving level to 100 or higher may allow you to double-pickpocket traders (with 90 Agility).
  • Gloves of silence will also improve the wearer's rate of success when pickpocketing. If a player does not want to use gloves of silence, then it is recommended that they use a regeneration bracelet to conserve food.
  • An equipped bow with no arrows or crossbow with no bolts will prevent the player from accidentally attacking one of the trade floor guards. The latter is more useful because it is one-handed, allowing you to wear a shield against the floor guards. If you have it, you may also use an Enhanced Excalibur to heal using the special attack.
  • Around 10 pieces of mid-to-high level food. Pineapple pizzas heal for 220 in two bites, but are quite expensive. Sharks are slightly less effective and slightly cheaper, while monkfish are much cheaper and slightly less effective than sharks. Another option may be bottles or jugs of wine which lower Attack when consumed and are extremely cheap but also heal far less than any of the above. Another option would be to bring baskets containing 5 strawberries as food. Each strawberry heals 7% of the player's life points, with a maximum of 69 LP each at 99 Constitution. This gives each basket a possible total of 345 life points. Strawberry baskets are also fairly cheap, costing roughly 300-400 gold pieces on the Grand Exchange. It can be faster to buy strawberries and baskets as separate items from the Exchange and then fill the baskets, because sometimes baskets of strawberries can be difficult to buy. Bunyip or Void Spinner pouches may also be helpful for restoring LP at a rate faster than how often you can be damaged.
  • 4 bars of two different metals (bronze and iron recommended). (be sure to keep them unnoted otherwise the director will not accept them.)
  • A player with access to Enhanced excalibur may find food unnecessary. A player with 99 Thieving using the weapon will have little need for other healing methods.
  • Good Armour if thieving level is 95 or under. Level 86 guards will attack if you fail to pickpocket the trader.
