The RuneScape guide was the first non-player character that players would meet in the game before the Learning the Ropes tutorial came to be. He was found in his house on Tutorial Island. He gave a brief but informative chat about the game.
At this NPC, a player was required to choose his or her character's looks. These included:

- Hair style / colour
- Body style / colour
- Legs style / colour
- Arms style
- Feet style / colour (brown or black)
